The vacations are over. My eldest nephew went to Standard I in a CBSE School in Chennai on day one after re-opening. After having been there from 9 a.m till 3.30 p.m, he came back home at about 4.15 p.m. His assignment for the day was to learn and write 2 tables. I inquired him as to whether the tables were taught by his teacher. He replied, "No mama, I have to learn the same in my home. That was the assignment given by my teacher for all the students". And you know it took nearly three hours from 7 p.m to 10 p.m for him to learn the tables. He was very tired. When we called some of the parents of his classmates, they too replied that the tables were not taught in the school and they too found it difficult to make their children learn the same at home. Is this fair? One can easily come across in every households where mothers' spending the entire evening with their children locked inside a room teaching them and in the process screaming and beating their children to have the work done by such means. One should understand that parents do not have professional expertise to teach and find it very difficult to cope with the situation. It is okay if one's mother or father is educated. For others they merely send these kids to tuition. I feel it is not fair on the schools to shed their responsibilities and shifting the burden to parents, completely forgetting for a moment their noble responsibilites. The homes have become extended schools now a days.
